Bruno Bourel 1957-ben született Párizsban. A Sorbonne-on előbb zenét, majd fotográfiát és filmezést tanult. Hamarosan rájött, hogy sem a forgatókönyvírás, sem a rendezés nem passzol hozzá igazán, ami az utóbbit illeti – vallotta meg –, hiányzik belőle az a fajta, egészséges diktátori hajlam, amely egy stáb okszerű irányításához kell.
GL: Any image is a record of two roads crossing: the person behind camera walks onto the path of the person in front of it. How did this meeting happen?
BB: This picture was born like many others of mine, like almost all of them. First, I check out if something is happening today in the town (or in the world) I am living in. For the past almost 20 years this city has been Budapest. That day in 2004, Hungary was celebrating joining the European Union. Having lived here – at that time – for more than 10 years, I knew that e-v-e-r-y-o-n-e was waiting for this moment. A huge, festive weekend took place and I was out with friends and kids, strolling on the waterfront, on the Buda side. When I had the feeling that something was about to happen I stopped and waited and told my friends that we’d meet somewhere later. Ninety-eight percent of the time I am alone when I work, but I remember that this day, there were many of us around.

Chi di voi ha già avuto occasione di trascorrere qualche giornata a Budapest, durante l’immancabile giro delle ultime ore per portare a casa qualche souvenir, avrà sicuramente passato in rassegna e forse anche acquistato alcune di queste cartoline.
A group of people assemble in front of the little café. Tall, small, in flowery blouses, each wears a different, prominent and bright colour on their body. A chubby old lady takes a tiny digital camera from her jacket pocket and moves in front of the entrance, blocking out all other tourists’ views of our table. Bruno Bourel turns to the little group and whispers smilingly in my direction: “That would also be a moment that inspires me.” His view of the city and its inhabitants not only has delighted art museum visitors for years but also captures the Budapest attitude to life in a particular way.

Bruno Bourel fényképész Párizsban született 1957-ben, de 1993 óta Budapesten él. '89-ben járt nálunk először, rögtön beleszeretett a városba, és annyira izgalmasnak találta a rendszerváltozás közepén járó országot, hogy onnantól kezdve folyamatosan Párizs és Budapest között ingázott. Fekete-fehér Budapest-sorozatait legtöbben saját kiadású képeslapjairól ismerik, melyekből mára több mint 200 ezer példányt adtak el. Parti-Nagy Lajossal készített Budapest-könyve pedig már négy nyelven jelent meg.
Bruno Bourel Magyarországon élő francia fotóművész, a kilencvenes évek elejétől kezdve kisebb-nagyobb intenzitással foglalkoztatja Budapest. Harminc éve kezdte a fotózást, most ötvenes évei közepén jár. A fényképezőgép mindig nála van, de ha valamiért mégsem használja, akkor fejben dolgozik: „A mindennapi gyakorláshoz nem kell eszköz, mert az eszköz ott van a fejemben. A kotta is a fejemben van a zongorázáshoz, síelni is tudok fejben”. Polaroid képekkel indult, aztán jöttek a fekete-fehér fotók és most újra dolgozik színesben is. Fényrajzok Budapest címmel csodás albumot adott ki a fővárosról, melyet Parti Nagy Lajos szövegei kísérnek, és aminek a negyedik kiadását fejezte be novemberben. A Duna közelében egy szép, régi pesti bérházban él magyar feleségével és gyerekeivel, itt beszélgettünk. Pár percre a zongorához is leült.
Vor dem kleinen Café sammelt sich ein Pulk Menschen. Große, kleine, in geblümter Bluse und mit hängenden Mundwinkeln, und jeder trägt eine andere markant strahlende Farbe am Leib, eine mollige alte Dame zieht aus ihrer Jackentasche eine winzige Digitalkamera und schiebt sich vor den Eingang, so dass sie allen anderen Touristen die Sicht auf unseren Tisch versperrt. Bourel dreht sich zu dem Grüppchen um und flüstert schmunzelnd in meine Richtung: „Auch das wäre wieder ein Moment, der mich begeistert“. Seine Sicht auf die Stadt und ihre Bewohner hingegen entzückt seit Jahren nicht nur die Besucher der Kunstmuseen, sondern fängt auf besondere Weise das Budapester Lebensgefühl ein.
